What Adobe’s new AI pricing changes mean for small creatives

Adobe has introduced a new wave of AI-powered tools across Photoshop, Illustrator and Premiere, and with them comes a shift in pricing. For big agencies, this barely registers. For small creative businesses, freelancers and independent makers, it lands differently.

Let’s clear the noise and look at what actually matters.

The first truth: Adobe is betting heavily on AI becoming inseparable from everyday creative work. The new pricing quietly reflects that. What used to be optional add-ons now sit inside your subscription. You’re paying for the direction they believe the industry is heading in, not just the tools you use today.

So the real question is not “Do I like this change?” but “Does this help me produce better work or run a smoother business?” And for many creatives, the answer is mixed.

Some of the new AI tools genuinely remove boring tasks: quick masking, cleanup, object removal, background extensions. These are the jobs nobody misses. If these tools save you hours every month, the price starts to justify itself.

Where it becomes trickier is when you’re paying for features you don’t use. Photographers who never composite, illustrators who draw by hand, or designers who prefer manual layout may feel like they’re subsidising tools built for someone else.

My advice is simple: track value, not features. If Adobe saves you time or makes your work better, the subscription is doing its job. If the tools sit unused, you might be better served by smaller software ecosystems — especially as alternatives like Affinity, Figma and Capture One grow more capable.

Change in the creative world is constant. What matters is staying aware of how tools shape your workflow, your costs and how clients perceive your professionalism. Use Adobe where it serves you. Step outside it where it doesn’t. You’re running a business, not a software museum.
